| 1. Carry a full academic course load as determined by the advisor and ESL Director.
2. Enroll in and successfully complete five courses per semester each year of enrollment.
3. Take the institutional TOEFL when required by the ESL Director during the ninth and tenth grades. The computer-based TOEFL (CBT) may replace the institutional TOEFL if taken in the same semester as the required institutional TOEFL. Institutional TOEFL scores cannot be used for college admission. Eleventh and twelfth grade students must take the computer-based TOEFL as often as is recommended by the ESL Director and/or their college counselors.
4. Be enrolled in ESL classes until an institutional TOEFL of 550, or a CBT of 213 is reached, or until approval of the ESL Director is secured. Students should expect to complete the full sequence of ESL courses unless the requirement is waived by the ESL Director. Students whose English proficiency is marginal may be requested to continue some kind of additional ESL work. Requirements will be determined by the ESL Director in cooperation with the student’s advisor and the grade level Dean.
5. Complete all OES graduation requirements as stated in the Upper School Handbook. ESL fulfills the OES foreign language requirement.* ESL Literature is considered an English course. Humanities is not a graduation requirement for international students who have been enrolled in ESL courses.
6. International students who are interested in being competitive for selective American colleges should know that by their junior year, they should 1) have earned a 213 on the CBT; 2) be enrolled in standard courses in the OES curriculum; and 3) be preparing for the SAT tests, the standard college entrance tests in the United States. If they are not able to meet these standards, their college options will be limited.
