If your child wishes to study violin, cello, bass, piano, jazz piano, voice, guitar, trombone, oboe, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, harp, drumset, percussion, harpsichord or organ, sign up for lessons! NEW INSTRUCTORS
We welcome three new faces to the Music Department this year – Derek Sims (US Instrumental & trumpet lessons), Jeanne Clausen (violin lessons) and Mike Horsfall (jazz and classical piano lessons).
Derek Sims
Derek Sims will be teaching the US Advanced Jazz Ensemble, the US Brass Ensemble class during the US Activity period, a Beginning Trumpet class for 4th graders, and will be available to teach private trumpet lessons to all ages in the After School Private Lesson Program. Derek directs the Jazz Orchestra for the Metropolitan Youth Symphony and is also a clinician and faculty member of the Mel Brown Summer Jazz Camps. He is an in-demand trumpeter in both the jazz and classical Portland music scene. He graduated with honors from The University of Michigan with a Bachelors of Music degree, studying with the great Armando Ghitalla (Boston Symphony), and Charles Daval (Montreal, Seattle Symphonies).
Jeanne Clausen (Private Violin Instructor)
Jeanne Clausen has been teaching private violin for more than 30 years. Her teachers include Sascha Jacobson, Ivan Galmian, Sigiswald Kuijeken along with others. Ms. Clausen has taught at the University of Southern California, Sarah Lawrence College, Cleveland Institute of Music, Scuola di Musica Antica di Venezia, Italy and several other prestigious schools. As a violin teacher, she has worked with children as young as four to older adults.
Mike Horsfall (Jazz and Classical Piano Instructor)
Mike Horsfall has been a professional musician in the Portland area for over 25 years, performing in such diverse rolls as featured artist, accompanist, composer and arranger, and recording artist. He co-founded the group "Tall Jazz", a successful trio that has performed together for 20 years and has recorded eight CD's. In 1986 Mike earned a Bachelors of Music Degree from Marylhurst University. He currently serves on the adjunct faculty at Mt. Hood Community College.
Ronnye Harrison is taking a leave of absence from the US as he pursues a teaching position as a Division I, NCAA collegiate coach in the sport of track and field at Portland State University this year. We wish him well, but we are excited that he will continue to teach the award winning MS Jazz Band, which meets 0 period.

The 3rd Grade Strings Program and the 4th Grade Beginning Trumpet Classes are being offered DURING THE SCHOOL DAY in the Lower School. There is no charge for these in-school group lessons. Parents are responsible for the cost of the instrument rental.
Students are also encouraged to participate in the Beginning Strings Program (Contact Neil Hollister), LS Orchestra (Contact Nelly Kovalev) and LS Band (Contact Adam steele), LS Harp Ensemble ( Contact Jennifer Craig) .
The 3rd–5th grade Girls Choir has an exciting year ahead and will have new outfits this year! – Contact Kris Van Auken.
OES HARP PROGRAM: - NEW HARP ENSEMBLE CLASSES for LS and US students!
Jennifer Craig, harp teacher at OES, will be offering a LS Harp Ensemble class for Beginners and a US Harp Ensemble class for Beginners at OES on Tuesday afternoons!

Jennifer Craig, principal harpist of the Oregon Symphony since 1970, is offering harp lessons on OES's new concert grand harp made by Lyon & Healy, commissioned three years ago as a part of our wonderful Miller grant. Students will be able to practice on the school's new harp. Jennifer will be teaching harp lessons after school on Tuesdays. Read a wonderful biography on the Oregon Symphony webpage about Jennifer. We are the only private PreK-12 school in the NW with a harp program, so plan to take advantage of this very special opportunity!
NEW LS PIANO: Over the summer, the LS has acquired a brand new Yamaha P-22 Teaching Piano! We are indeed thankful for this new acquisition! Come by the LS Music Room and check it out!
MORE STORAGE FOR INSTRUMENTS
We have added more storage for more instruments in our temporary storage area for instrumental music!
INSTRUMENT RENTALS: OES owns several violins (from 1/4 to full), a half-size cello, and a full-size cello – as well as other brass and woodwind instruments. If you are interested in renting a STRING instrument, please contact Neil Hollister, Nelly Kovalev or Sue Jensen. If you are interested in renting a BRASS or WOODWIND instrument, contact Derek Sims, Ronnye Harrison, Adam Steele, Nancy Teskey, or Sue Jensen.
EQUIPMENT & LIABILITY FORMS: If your child is using a school-owned music instrument which remains on campus (such as piano, guitar, percussion equipment), be sure that they have filled out, signed, and returned the Music Equipment Liability Agreement forms to Sue Jensen by Sept. 30.
LOCKERS: All MS and US instrumental students will be assigned a music locker to store their instrument. If you do not have a locker—please let Derek Sims, Nancy Teskey or Sue Jensen know—and we will get your child a locker. Remind your child to store their instrument in their locker and to put a nametag on their instrument case. Instruments found unattended will be picked up for safekeeping. If your child has lost their instrument, please contact your music teacher or Sue Jensen.
CDS/DVDS – Recordings of Concerts & Events: Our Upper School Recording and Concert Production Activity last year recorded the major concerts of the year! CDs and DVDs are available through the OES Gallery and/ or emailing US music faculty member, Adam Steele .Consider a gift of music to your friends and family!
MUSIC FACULTY NEWS: Many of our music faculty are practicing professional musicians in the NW – and perform with such premiere ensembles as Oregon Repertory Singers, Cappella Romana, Portland Baroque Orchestra, Portland Opera, Oregon Symphony, Friends of Rain, Portland Baroque Orchestra Chorus, Vancouver Symphony, Tall Jazz, Lewis and Clark College Symphony, to name a few.
