Grandparents and Special Friends Brighten the Day
Grandparents and Special Friends Brighten the Day

The day before Thanksgiving break began, we were proud to welcome grandparents and special friends of OES students to our campus! Rain in the skies and a chill in the air didn't stop 330 of these honored guests from visiting the OESians in their lives.

A hot breakfast in the gym as well as remarks from our school leaders kicked off the event, and then it was off to classroom visits! Guests of Middle and Lower School students saw their young learners in action, while a smaller group of grandparents and special friends took a tour with Head of Upper School Asha Appel.

Our fifth graders spent time interviewing visitors about their youths, asking questions to discover what life was like many decades ago. Interview subjects shared memories of attending small community schools, listening to sports on the radio, and playing outside with friends.

In the Middle School's project room, Mr. Ma's Mandarin students cooked pre-made dumplings for their guests. When it came time to serve these late-morning snacks, Ma queried of his students, "And who do we start with?"

"Grandparents!" came the reply. Ma nodded approvingly. "We always honor our elders," he remarked.

Following these classroom adventures, everyone gathered in the gym once more to enjoy both instrumental and vocal music from students, including Lower and Middle School choirs as well as ensembles.

Thanks to all who helped make this day truly both grand and special!
