St. Helen's Hall Cross

Artist Reproduces St. Helen’s Hall Cross As Sterling Silver Miniature for Necklace

The Flemish cross that once topped the highest point of St. Helen’s Hall in downtown Portland has been commemorated with a miniature reproduction. The original cross was donated to St. Helen’s Hall by the Class of 1922 and was erected on the cupola of the chapel wing in memory of the school’s late chaplain, the Rev. W.A.M. Breck. In 1964, it was wrenched from the building at Southwest 13th Ave. and Hall Street by two firemen on an extension ladder as the school prepared to move to Raleigh Hills to make way for Interstate 405. In 1969, in commemoration of the school’s centennial, the cross was mounted atop a monument near the belltower, where it remains today. The sterling silver miniatures were created by artist and OES parent Jan Gordon and will be given as gifts to members of the 50-year class who are in attendance at each annual reunion. Others may purchase the crosses at cost for $50 including shipping. They come with a chain for wearing as a necklace and may be ordered by writing, calling or emailing Alumnae/i Coordinator Lacie McKearney.
