A Message From David Lowell

Tonight, you are all invited to return to campus for our annual Advent Service of Lessons and Carols in the OES Chapel. This service is an Anglican tradition that dates back to the 19th century. At OES the service features musical offerings from different student choirs and reading from OEs community members.

On Friday, the entire Lower School will gather for Giving Chapel.  The 5th graders have shared information about these agencies during Gatherings and Chapel, created displays about the agencies and made instruction sheets for simple crafts a student could do. During Giving Chapel we present our gifts to representatives from the agencies.  Then the 5th graders will represent the Lower School as they head out into the community to deliver the gifts and support the agencies. Remember to bring your Giving Bags in on Friday.

The celebration of the season takes on an entirely different character at next week’s St. Nick Chapel, when students exclaim their excitement before we head out into the Winter Break.  

LS Friendly Reminders
•    Student Absence and Plan Change Form - To improve the security of the Student Absence and Plan Change Form we have moved it into the Parent Portal. You may access it after signing into your parent portal.
•    Gift Giving - As the season of giving is upon us I ask you review the the OES Gift Policy (p.19) 
•    Santa Hats – children are welcome to wear Santa hats on 12/15, St Nick Chapel day.  Until then, please keep the Santa hats at home as they can be a distraction to many.
•    Be Prepared
Be sure your child comes to school dressed for the windy and cold weather.  
•    Adverse Weather Conditions
•    Update your Honeywell Instant Alert account.  You need to register yourself in the Honeywell Instant Alert program to receive emergency and closure announcements from OES. Instant Alert Sign-in Page
•    Be sure your list of adults who are authorized to pick-up your child is current.  
•    During any emergency, designated OES employees will remain in Lower School until all children have been released to appropriate adults.

A big thank you to all the 4th and 5th graders who challenged themselves to compete in this year's National Geography Bee.

We offer a reduced application fee of $50, if you apply online by December 14.

If you have a child ready to join the OES community in Fall 2018 the application deadline is:

·       Grades PK – 8:  January 18

·       Grades 9-12:  January 25

Families seeking financial aid for the 2018-2019 school year may begin the online Parent Financial Statement (PFS).  The PFS is due on February 2.

Author and Speaker Amy Morin will join the OES Community to talk about her new book “13
Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do”.  Amy Morin is a licensed clinical
social worker, college Psychology instructor and psychotherapist.  Since
2002, she has helped people address issues ranging from depression and
anxiety to parenting problems and stress management.  Her new book focuses
on raising self-assured children and training their brains for a life full
of happiness, meaning and success.

Time is Running Out!

Hello everyone!
We are currently in our Sport Stacking unit and wanted to let you know about a few upcoming events that your child may be interested in…

1) PDX Sport Stacking Club starts Nov. 18th from 9:30 – 11:00, in the OES Gym. This club is open to any stackers of all ages from OES and in the Portland community. This is a free activity that will meet one Saturday a month and speed stacks will be available to borrow. Please help spread the word to other sport stackers in the community and all skill levels are welcome. You can find more information here... https://www.facebook.com/PDXSportStackers
 
2) Speed Stacks for purchase - OES students and PDX Sport Stacking Club members can purchase Speed Stacks to practice with at home. An information flyer will go home with your student and extra flyers will also be available on the PAL bookshelf in the Lower School lobby. Please choose from the list on the form, email Coach Stephanie your request, and your account will be charged for the amount purchased. Speed stacks will be available from 11/8/17 until winter break. 

We have limited supply of colors and quantities. Click here for a current inventory list. PLUS, 20% of your purchase goes directly to our PE program/PDX Sport Stacking Club.

3) Save the date! OES will be hosting the NW Regional/Oregon State Sport Stacking Championship on March 3rd. Stackers from WA, OR, CA, AZ, HI, and Canada will be participating. This event is open to all ages with divisions from 6 and under to the master divisions for those over 19. We will need many volunteers to help with judging, be division managers, and help with many other positions.

Volunteers are already hard at work dreaming up an enchanted evening to entertain our community.

Ways you can help:

  • Donate sports, concert, or arts tickets, vacation stays, restaurant gift cards, and more. See our  wish list  for more ideas.
  • Class Baskets: Keep an eye out for your class basket theme and help build a enticing basket by donating items; or
  • Class Case of Wine: This year each class is being asked to help build a Class Case for the Wall of Wine. Wine will still be available for purchase by the bottle.
  • Lower School Class Projects: Help organize an art project made by students of each LS class. Click  here to sign up. (Artistic abilities are not required for parents who sign up to help.)
  • Business Advertising and Sponsorship: Annual partners include law firms, medical and dental practices, financial services firms, real estate companies, and favorite local restaurants. Click  here for more information on Advertising and Sponsorship.

Fairy Godmother Diane Engelhard Jones is always seeking great ideas and new volunteers to make this annual celebration a huge success. Email auction@oes.edu to learn how you can help sprinkle the fairy dust far and wide.

Starting in January 2018, OES will be utilizing FACTS for their student billing.

Families will have:

·       24-hour access to your student account

·       Easier to read statements

·       Auto-pay for tuition payments - credit card or checking

·       24-hour customer service in multiple languages (including Spanish & Mandarin)

·       Flywire for easy international payments

·       Authorize grandparents (or other party) to access your account and make payments

All current families will need to create an account with FACTS. Watch for more information to be sent via email as we make this transition.

Wednesday, January 10, 7-8pm

Join us for an evening PAL event devoted to learning about the OES math program from Middle School through Upper School. You will hear from Liz Weiler, the preK-12 Chair of the Math Department, about how the program has changed in the past several years to best serve our students and their learning. Liz has also invited students who can speak to their diverse math experiences at OES. We are inviting parents from 5th to 8th grade to attend this event, but all parents are welcome.

Here is a great opportunity to tune up your skills, stay active and have fun during the start of Winter Break. Join our very own OES Head Varsity Basketball Coach Lauran Pratt - for some fun in the gym building skills and getting ready for “BAM”.  Basketball skill building will be the main focus of each day but other activities will also be included so come ready to have some fun.  Cost is $150 for all 3 days.  We will pro-rate for less than that so email extension@oes.edu if you prefer a different schedule.

FOESL is a small group of OES parents and educators who work together to plan campus events that celebrate our community's love of reading and storytelling, including author visits, literary festivals, and the annual Great OES Book Swap (GOBS). The time commitment is very small--one hour most months, along with whatever time you want to give in the spring to help with GOBS--and the work is very rewarding!

Even if you haven’t attended previous meetings, feel free to jump in at any time during the school year.  With members drawn from Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School, we always welcome new members and families from all divisions.

Meetings are held on Tuesday mornings in Platt Global Classroom, starting at 8:10 and running about an hour.  The remaining academic year's meetings are planned for:

February 20th

March 20th

April 3rd

May 15th

GOBS is planned for the week of April 9th, coinciding with National Library Week.

PANTS:

Tailored pants with zipper front; navy blue or khaki only; no jeans, jeans style, no patch pockets or cargo style.

SHORTS:

Tailored walking shorts with zipper front; navy blue or khaki only; no jeans or cargo style.

SKIRTS, SKORTS:

 

Dennis Uniform Kirk plaid, navy blue or khaki. Navy or white leggings, tights or bike shorts may be worn under skirts.

DRESS:

Dennis Uniform short-sleeved light blue or navy polo dress; OES logo; Kirk plaid shift dress.

SHIRTS:

Solid white, navy, light blue or forest green; short or long sleeve polo shirts; must have OES logo.

SWEATSHIRTS:

Solid navy blue or forest green; OES logo. No OES spirit wear.

SWEATERS:

Navy blue cardigan; must have OES logo.

VESTS:

Navy or forest green quilted; must have OES logo. (Used Navy or forest green fleece vests or jackets with OES logo may also continue to be worn).

SHOES:

Shoes must offer firm support and resist slipping for active play. Closed toe, closed heel, athletic type shoes (e.g., tennis shoes, walking shoes, sport shoes) are required. No sandals, heelies, wheelies, clogs, Uggs or blinkies, please. Boots may be worn on snow days only.

SOCKS:

Socks must be worn at all times.

JEWELRY:

For safety reasons, only watches and studs for pierced ears. Please refrain from sending the Lower School students to school with necklaces, drop earrings, bracelets, multiple scrunchies worn as bracelets, rings, etc.

HEADWEAR:

Hair bands should be white, navy, forest green, or Kirk plaid. No scarves, sports caps or kerchiefs.

OUTERWEAR:

Any coat or jacket may be worn for warmth outdoors.
