Welcome From Head of School Matthew H. Hanly

Welcome to Oregon Episcopal School. We are a school community in which students find joy in the learning environment and prepare themselves for success in the most challenging colleges and universities.

If you visit our campus, you will discover that our faculty teach at OES because they love to work with young people who are excited about learning, who think for themselves, and who think about the needs of others. Our students appreciate the relationships they develop with with faculty who embody the joys and rewards of lifelong learning. Those relationships are usually foremost on the lips of alumni when they tell what they most valued about their experience at the school.

At OES, integrity is valued as much as intellect, and the school places the development of good citizens and kind people on an equal level with academic excellence. The Episcopal tradition, which has guided the school since its founding in 1869, reflects a spirit of inclusion, respect, and reason. Because we are a school that welcomes students of all religions, we emphasize an ecumenical approach in which each child pursues his or her own spiritual journey so that they can grow in the beliefs and traditions of their own faith.

Of course the intellectual journey is at the heart of the OES experience. Our philosophy leads us to value discovery and thoughtfulness at the center of learning. Homework, information gathering, and practice exercises are employed only in the service of a higher goal, so that students appreciate their purpose. Although virtually all graduates go on to higher education, getting into college is not a goal unto itself but a path by which to continue experiencing the joy of learning.

Come visit and walk around the OES campus. You will see examples of the excitement of learning all around you. We welcome the opportunity to show you our students at work. You will see students who exercise critical thinking and who are becoming young men and women of vision and courage.
