The School
Founded in 1869, OES is a PreK-12 independent school offering an enriched academic experience for college-bound students in a day and boarding program.

The Campus
Located in Southwest Portland, the campus has 59 acres and includes two wetlands. The Upper School was renovated in 2005, and a state-of-the-art Math, Science, and Technology Building opened in 2003. Other facilities include a building for the graphic arts program, a gymnasium, a tennis facility, a synthetic turf field, an Olympics class fencing salon, and boys and girls dormitories.

The Students
The enrollment is about 830 students, with approximately 335 in the Lower School, 200 in the Middle School, and 295 in the Upper School. The boarding program includes 55 students from 13 countries including the United States.

The Faculty
OES has 117 faculty members and 92 support staff, including full- and part-time employees. Faculty members have been awarded 24 educational grants and won 36 awards for teaching excellence; 66 percent hold advanced degrees. The school-wide student-teacher ratio is 7:1, and the dorm student-dorm parent ratio is 5:1. Class size in the Upper School averages 14 students.

Academics
Average SAT scores for Upper School students for 2004-2006 were 642 in critical reading, 650 in mathematics and 625 in writing (information from 2006 only). Sixty percent of students take Advanced Placement and/or honors-level classes. Twenty to 25 students a year are designated Advanced Placement Scholars, and the school's median AP score is 4. The mock trial team often qualifies for state competition, and OES students are leaders in the Model United Nations program.

Science Research Program
The science curriculum is renowned for its focus on individual research. Six students since 1999 have been finalists in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search, with two of them placing in the top three. One Intel finalist went on to become a Rhodes Scholar. Students also frequently perform well in the Siemens Competition, the International Science and Engineering Fair, and other venues.

Athletics
Eighty percent of Upper School students participate in sports, and in recent years athletic teams have won state championships in volleyball, boys tennis, girls soccer, and boys soccer, and boys lacrosse. The OES fencing coach was the primary trainer for the Olympic gold medal winner in women’s saber in 2004.

Performing Arts
Eighty percent of Upper School students participate in performing arts. Students in the playwriting class direct their plays using actors from the acting class. Several of these student plays are chosen for public performance with full production including lighting, costumes, and sets created by the Stagecraft activity. Plays by well-known playwrights also are produced under faculty direction. Vocal and instrumental music groups at all levels perform frequent concerts during the school year, and some of them participate in competitions.
