Nursing Services

OES has a nurse available on campus each day during the school day. Ill or injured students will be assisted by the division staff and referred to the nurse when appropriate. The nurse is available to discuss any health concerns you may have regarding your child.

Medication at School and on School Trips

Oregon State law requires both written parental permission and written medical care provider’s instruction in order for a student to receive medication within the school setting. This information is needed for both prescription and over-the-counter medications.

The School has written physician orders that direct faculty and staff in safe, appropriate use of specific over-the-counter medications for specific, mild conditions such as headaches, pain from minor injury or illness, or minor allergic symptoms. All students at OES have a parent-signed form on file that specifies which medications may be given.

OES expects that students will not be bringing medication to school for self administration. It is best to have adults supervise medication. However, expectations and rules vary slightly among the different divisions so please refer to your child’s division handbook as to what is acceptable.

During the school day and on school trips, students of any division will not be allowed to carry the following medications for self administration: prescription pain medications, psychiatric medications, or medications for treatment of learning disorders. These medicines must be checked in with the OES Nurse or Trip Leader and a plan will be made for convenient daily administration.

Communicable Diseases

Please contact the school immediately if your child has contracted any communicable disease. We are required by health department regulations to let other families know that their children have been exposed. If your child has contracted head lice, OES nurses can provide up-todate treatment information and will screen classmates, siblings, and other close contacts for signs of the disease.

Immunizations

All OES students are required by Oregon State law to provide documentation of up-to-date immunization status on the State Certificate of Immunization Status form that is provided in the enrollment packet.

Accident Insurance

OES has a school accident insurance policy that is provided through tuition funds. The School insurance is a secondary policy and covers only accidents and injuries incurred during school activities. Parents must cover their children on a primary policy because the school insurance is limited, usually paying the difference between a primary policy reimbursement and the cost of treatment. The School Nurse will provide you with an insurance claim form if one is needed.

Safety Programs

The safety of our children, employees, and guests is of paramount importance at OES. The following list describes the major safety programs in place at the school.

  • The OES Director of Safety works with the Health and Safety Committee to monitor safety throughout the school, making recommendations, as appropriate, to the Head of School and the Administrative Council. The Director also works with the Health and Safety Committee and prepares an annual summary of accidents and incidents at the school.

  • All employees have first aid certification and receive CPR training. Some of the staff also receive training in administration of epinephrine for severe allergic reactions.

  • An administrator is on 24-hour call at all times during the school year.

  • Administrators meet regularly to create, practice, and evaluate simulated emergency situations.

  • An OES Emergency Procedures Guide is available in every office and classroom, and serves to guide employees in their response to a wide range of emergencies.

  • Fire and earthquake drills are conducted regularly throughout the school year.

  • OES supplies first aid kits on all trips, and first aid kits and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are kept in convenient locations throughout the campus.

  • Emergency communication and early closure information can be found in the back of the OES Directory.

Field Trips

A wide range of field trips, day and overnight, are incorporated into the curriculum and offered throughout the school year. All trips are reviewed by the Division Head to ensure the trips are well staffed and that all preparation and programming requirements have been met.

All students are required to have the Field Trip Permission Form signed by their parents or guardian and on file in the appropriate divisional office. This form allows your child to participate in off-campus activities during school hours during the academic year. Additional permission forms will be required for after-school hours, weekend, or overnight trips, and will be distributed as needed. OES reserves the right to deny a student’s participation in any trip if the Division Head, in consultation with the school counselor and nurse, feels that the student is not physically or mentally prepared to meet the challenges of the trip and/or may pose a threat to his/her safety and/or the safety of others.

While on school trips, students are expected to adhere to all OES and trip-specific rules. If a trip leader determines that a student has broken the rules of behavior and safety so that s/he merits being sent home from the trip, or if the trip leader determines that a student is too ill or injured to participate in the trip, the parents may be expected to retrieve their child from the trip.

Driving and Parking

The OES parking lot and driveways are congested areas that are shared by both vehicles and pedestrians. To make the campus as safe as possible, please drive slowly (10 MPH) and with caution. Always yield to foot traffic.

Parking and standing is prohibited at all times along red curbs, and at other areas as marked. Standing is allowed along yellow curbs marked as drop-off and pick-up zones, if the driver remains with the vehicle. Please do not leave your vehicle unattended in yellow zones, even if you intend to be there for “only a minute”—it disrupts the flow of loading and unloading.

Each division has specific guidelines regarding drop-off, pickup, and parking. Please refer to the appropriate sections in this handbook for details appropriate to you.

To ensure the safety of our children and families, as well as families in the Montclair neighborhood, please strictly observe the 25 mph speed limit on Nicol Road. As we wish to be good neighbors, we ask that you not cut through the neighborhood by using Willowmere Drive or Westgate Way.
