Art Excursions

Ever been to a real artist’s studio? Have you been to the multitude of galleries in the Pearl? From the Art Museum to Alberta, each day will be spent visiting galleries, studios, and the local art scene. See amazing sculptures, glass art, and paintings while travelling with others who love art. Bring along your sketch pad and camera—we will want to capture the beautiful things we see.

Cordova Alaska Adventure

Ever want to see the wild side of Alaska? This is your opportunity. See a glacier, visit Whittier, and eventually arrive at a remote cabin on Mavis Island. Canoe, hike, swim, and enjoy the beauty of this rustic location. Learn backpacking and survival skills along the way. Get to know the other students through teambuilding and sharing life together. This memorable trip includes all costs—transportation, food, and lodging. Come back with new friendships and a desire to return to the wilderness again and again.

Fun in “Write” Places

Have you ever wanted to design your own camp? Do you love to write about amazing places, or do you just want to discover the fun of writing about fun places? This is your chance! Here’s the plan: You tell us where to go! Shortly before camp starts, we will contact your family to find out your favorite places. We’ll use “Google-docs” to document our week by creating amazing pieces of writing based on our morning excursions to our favorite spots around town. After lunch, we’ll devote the afternoon to writing about the fun we’ve had.

Introduction to the Marine Environment

This class will introduce the variety of habitats in the ocean and the dynamic nature of the estuary and intertidal zones. It will blend a study of the anatomy and diversity of invertebrate organisms with an understanding of the impact of the cycles of tides and various human activities on the local ecosystems. The classes will meet during the morning Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and go on an overnight trip to the coast near Newport, Oregon, from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon. We will stay overnight in yurts at Beverly Beach and visit several sites along the coast including Depoe Bay, tidepools at Yaquina Natural Area, maritime forests at Fogarty Head, displays and living critters at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and the Oregon Oyster Farm.

Oregon Odyssey

Put on your hiking shoes, strap on your backpack, and let's explore some of Oregon's natural treasures! Multnomah Falls, Astoria, and Mt. Hood will be just a few of our destinations. We will be hiking, identifying the plants and animals around us, and learning basic wilderness survival. There will always be something to learn as we discover new places, make new friends and have fun!

Outdoor Adventure Camp - FULL

Practice archery, cook outdoors, construct shelters, fly fish, and observe wildlife in this fun outdoor adventure. This and more will be covered in our five days together exploring all new territory. Each day brings a new destination, from the Columbia River Gorge to the Salmon River Trail. The forests’ natural beauty will call to you when we visit ancient forests. Catch frogs, newts, salamanders, and tadpoles. Follow the footprints of animals such as elk, deer, and great blue herons. Get ready for adventure!

Outdoor Life: Camp & Hike Oregon

Develop an appreciation for the great outdoors as we hit the trail, ready for adventure. Become familiar with using a compass, navigating through the woods, and marking a trail. After we have mastered how to stay safe in the wilderness, we will learn about gear, clothing, and survival techniques. We’ll become good observers and search for specimens, edible plants, and woodland animals. Prepare for fun on our overnight campout as we plan the whole experience together. Spend the night inside the tent that you set up. Get out the flashlights to search for nocturnal animals. Roasting marshmallows and singing camp songs will add to the enjoyment.

Outdoor Skills for Young Ones

Experience a week of adventure while engaging in fun and exciting outdoor activities. Learn to navigate through the woods, recognize animal tracks, and pack a proper hiking pack. Explorers get hungry, so let’s learn to cook outdoors—s’mores anyone? Learn and practice all the essentials of outdoor survival.

Outdoor Skills II

Did you ever think of taking an extended hiking trip…maybe a week or more? Get prepared by learning how to build a fire, even in wet conditions, and the essentials of packing a pack at minimum weight. Understand and practice navigation using GPS, a compass, and the sun and moon. Identify edible plants and filter your water. Know how to splint a leg or even just handle those irritating blisters while on the trail. We’ll learn and practice these skills on Oregon’s trails, so you can be safe and prepared on your next adventure.

Portland by Neighborhood

Who has the best sushi and where can you find underground tunnels? Every neighborhood has something unique to offer. Spend a day in the Alberta district checking out the studios. Pick berries and visit farms on Sauvie Island. Visit the yachts at the Southwest waterfront. Cool off in the amazing fountains all over Portland. Every day we will visit a new neighborhood and experience the best it has to offer.

Service Learning as Leadership: Our Power for Good

Let your words and actions reflect your heart as you develop a deeper awareness of local and world needs. Each day we will embark on a service learning endeavor in the Portland community. There you will find opportunities both to share of yourself and to learn from others. On-campus time will be used to consider examples and models of leadership through service, and how service leadership can extend well into our global community. Have a fabulous time with other class participants, and help make a real difference.

Treasure Hunting With Geocachers

Where oh where in the Portland area are geocache treasures hidden? Using teams, we will head out and begin our navigation, using a handheld GPS unit. Input your coordinates and you are off to search for treasure. Be the first to find it. Develop skills with this technology, and after camp ends you can travel the world in search of treasure.

Walking Portland

How lucky we are to live in such a beautiful and diverse city! But do you know the extent of its rich culture, history, arts, and education? Come on a week of walking adventures. Use our amazing public transportation system—including the MAX—and walk to get around town and discover areas such as Old Town, The Pearl District, Multnomah Village, and Nob Hill. We’ll visit parks, museums, cafes, and other unique landmarks that you will no doubt want to share with friends and family.
