Wonder, Explorer, & Discovery Faculty
ALLYSON BICE earned her BA in education with a teaching certificate. She has more than five years experience teaching kindergarten in the public schools.
SUSAN CALVERT has been teaching art classes for OES Summer Discovery for the past 18 years and has more than 25 years of experience teaching art classes to school-age children. Susan also produces art work.
MANDY COFFEE is a licensed music educator in the Portland/Metro area. She has been working with and developing music programs with children for the past 10 years. Mandy has a passion for children finding ways to create experience and develop the music within them.
SCOTT CORRIS has taught at OES since 1990 and is currently teaching physical education for the Lower School. He earned his BS from Northland College. His passion is working with kids and leading sports activities.
KATRINA FROELICH is returning for her second year of teaching Drama in the OES Discovery Program. She earned an M.A. in Educational Theatre at New York University, a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Southern Oregon University, and completed her Teaching Certification at George Fox University.
LAURAN PRATT joined the OES faculty in 1997, teaching PE for the Middle School. He earned his BA in secondary physical education from Concordia University. He has spent the past eight summers teaching sports for Summer Discovery.
Faculty for classes
JUIDI ALONGI joined the Lower School at OES in 2008. She earned her B.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
ANNA ANGELOVA currently teaches fencing for OES. Anna is a former Bulgaria Olympian and has been working for the OES fencing program for the past five years.
MARY BARTHELEMY taught at OES for more than 20 years before she retired. She earned her BS and MAT from Lewis & Clark College. Mary is currently writing children’s books and teaching courses in children’s literature.
PHILLIP BARTSCH has been teaching at Carus Elementary for more than 30 years. He received his BA in Elementary Education from Nazarene College.
DENNIS BLACK is a Lower School PE teacher and varsity basketball coach at OES. He played college basketball at the University of Portland and was a 1984 Portland Trailblazer draft pick.
DOUGLAS BLOCH is a teacher, author and counselor. He obtained his BA in math and psychology from New York University and his MA in counseling from the University of Oregon. He is the author of 12 books on personal development,
DEBORAH BRIDGNELL has taught Kindergarten at OES for the past eight years. She earned her BS in Education from Southern Oregon University and loves to cook with her children.
PHILLIP CRAIG received his BA in English from the University of North Carolina and his Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. He is OES head chaplain and facilitator of the OES All School Service Learning Committee.
STEVE DECKER has been teaching on the Upper School science faculty since 2005. He currently teaches Electronics and Engineering Design. Before joining OES he did and led R&D for a variety of companies.
NICK DePRETER teaches 4th grade at OES. Nick has an extensive background working with all ages as an outdoor educator and trip leader on rivers, mountains and deserts with Wilderness First Responder and Leave No Trace certification.
GABE EDGE earned his BA in Mathematics from Linfield College. He has been teaching mathematics in the Upper School at OES for the past four years.
DAVID GOMES teaches Web Design and Culture, and Digital Simulations and Virtual Worlds to OES Upper School students. David is actively exploring new software for creative work with digital technology.
JEFFRY GOTTFRIED is a licensed backcountry guide and Wilderness First Responder and founder of Educational Recreational Adventures. Jeff is a graduate of University of Oregon, Portland State and University of California, Berkeley.
KRISTEN HAFERBECKER has been at OES since 2008. She holds a B.A. from the University of the Pacific and a Master's from New York University, both in Performing Arts Administration. Kristen has worked with Jane Kenney-Norberg in the OES Lego Physics program for the past two years.
BETH HAHN taught writing classes for Portland Public Schools Talented and Gifted Program for 20 years. She currently teaches fiction writing classes for gifted students, and tutors middle and high school students in writing, study, and organizational skills. Beth's passion is helping young people develop their creative voice.
ANGELA HANCOCK has taught at OES since 1997 and is currently the Middle School Technology Coordinator. She earned her M.A. in Math and Science Education from Wheeling Jesuit University. Angela has been sharing her enthusiasm for learning with students of all ages for 31 years.
TOM HANDEL has been leading outdoor wilderness-based trips for OES for seven years. He is certified as a wilderness first responder and has lived in Alaska. Tom is committed to leading safe adventures and sharing his appreciation for the great outdoors.
TONY HANN has offered Chess Vision this past year at OES. He has been coaching chess for the past eight years.
LAURA HARLEY joined OES in 2009. She has a B.A. in elementary and middle school education from the University of Michigan. Laura also has experience in outdoor education and has led wilderness trips for kids and adults.
DOVINA ISRAEL-GRECO currently teaches 5th grade in the Hillsboro School District and is an adjunct instructor for GTEP at PSU. She has a Master's Degree from Pacific University and an ESOL endorsement from Lewis & Clark College.
KIAH JOHNSON MOUNSEY was appointed in 2007 and currently teaches third grade at OES. She earned her B.S. and master's In education from the University of Oregon.
ANGELA LEONG earned her M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Chaminade University and a B.S. in Philosophy from Loyola Marymount University. She has 17 years of experience as a tennis coach and has taught many tennis camps for school-aged students through high school.
KELOLA McCRARY has studied in Spain, lived and taught in Venezuela, and worked intensively with the Spanish-speaking community in Oregon. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Latin American Studies from Boston University and a Master's in Spanish from Portland State. This is Kelola's third year at OES and she is the K-12 Language Department Chair.
ANDY McGEE earned her B.A. from the Evergreen State College in 2009, with an emphasis in child development and nutrition. She has been working with kids in homes, gardens and schools in the Northwest since 2001.
CATHERINE MOLLOSEAU joined the OES faculty in 2009, teaching physics for the Upper School. She earned a B.S. in metallurgical engineering from Michigan Tech University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science from Carnegie Mellon.
DAVID MOSS has a Master's of Education from the University of Oregon and an Oregon teaching license in Social Studies and Language Arts. He has traveled all over the world, immersing himself in local culture and collecting resources for his classes.
PETER MUSSELMAN received a B.S. in music from Southern Oregon University in Ashland and his M.F.A. in 2008 from Mills College in Oakland, Calif. Peter has extensive experience in music camps, private music lessons, music composition and digital recording.
ROB ORR was appointed in 2002 to teach science in the Upper School at OES. He has been teaching science for 30 years, and has taught a Marine Ecology elective to seniors for the past five years. Rob earned his BS in Zoology from Duke University, and his MAT from Lewis and Clark College.
ROBIN ASHLEY ORR graduated from Oregon Episcopal School. Robin earned her B.A. in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University in 2009. She recently student taught in a third grade class at a public elementary school in the Evergreen School District.
TUCKER PIERSON teaches girls varsity lacrosse at OES. She is a high school English and Social Studies teacher in the Portland Public School District. Tucker has a B.A. from Hamilton College in New York and an M.A. in teaching from Lewis & Clark College.
JERRY PURVIS has coached Middle School girls basketball at OES for seven seasons–two seasons at the 6th grade level and five seasons at the A team level (7th/8th grade), winning one Metro League championship and reaching the semi-finals four times.
STEPHANIE RANKIN has a B.S. in Physical Education from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and an M.Ed from the University of Phoenix in education. She has been a P.E. teacher, basketball coach and camp director for the past 14 years.
JEANNIE RAWLEY is in her 11th year as a third grade teacher at OES. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics Education and received her Master's in Education from PSU. She recently completed her Yoga Calm Certification.
CHELSEA REED has worked at OES since 2008 in the Extended Care Program. She earned her B.A. in Fine Arts at the University of Oregon. Chelsea enjoys teaching art to children and being outdoors as much as possible.
LINDSAY RICKARD has her B.S. in Recreation Management from The University of Montana and M.Ed. in Kinesiology from The University of Texas. She is in her second year at OES as an after-school and summer program instructor and substitute in the Lower School.
DEBBY SCHAUFFLER has been teaching at OES since 1991. She earned a BA in French language and literature from Smith College in 1974 and an MA in comparative literature from the University of California at Berkeley in 1978.
ROBIN SCHAUFFLER began teaching at OES in 2003. She earned her BA in US history at Bryn Mawr College and is a veteran of many writing classes and critique groups.
TERESA SHELBY has been studying Latin and Roman history for the past ten years. As part of her studies, she has travelled to numerous sites of significance in ancient times, and has a growing collection of books, artifacts, and artwork on Roman themes. Teresa is a practicing physician with a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Louisville and a BA in Philosophy and Political Science.
MISSY SMITH is a middle school physical education instructor and was recently named head varsity basketball coach at Oregon Episcopal School. Missy earned her B.S. degree in exercise and sport science at Oregon State University and a master of arts in teaching from Lewis & Clark.
AMY STEEL has worked as an arts educator at the Portland Children's Museum and is an adjunct professor at Portland State University. Amy has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Portland State University.
PENELOPE ST. CLAIRE has an M.A. in Teaching Arts and an Oregon Teaching Credential. She currently substitutes for Portland Public Schools and OES, and she teaches art classes at her studio in Northeast Portland.
LAURA STRUDWICK holds a Masters in Education with more than ten years of teaching experience in middle and high school Language Arts and Social Studies. She is currently working on her doctoral degree in Mythological Studies with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute.
DENNIS SULLIVAN is the Varsity Boys Lacrosse Coach at OES. A former All-American defenseman at Brown University, Dennis also has coached high school lacrosse for 10 years. Coach Sullivan teaches 8th grade Humanities and serves as the assistant athletic director.
ANN SULZER teaches Middle School humanities at OES. She earned her B.A. in English and her secondary teaching certificate. She is currently working on her master’s in English literature. Ann also has experience in test preparation and administration.
TOM VAN GASSE has been a competitive tennis player for more than 12 years. As a student at Portland State University, Tom finds time not only for school but for his passion of playing and teaching tennis to all who wish to learn.
TORIE VAN HORNE is a graduate in Drama and Theater Studies from the University of Dublin, Trinity College, and is the new Stagecraft instructor and set designer at OES. Aside from drama, Torie has a great love of language and the visual arts.
ANN VON OFENHEIM has been teaching math at OES for more than 10 years. She has her undergraduate degree from Cornell and her master’s degree from University of Oregon.
ART WARD earned his Ph.D from UC-Berkeley in Humanities and his B.A. from Tufts University in English. He began teaching full time for the Upper School English Department in 2001.
ROBIN WEITZER earned her M.A.T. in TOESL from the School for International Training and her B.A. from the University of Michigan. Formerly the Director of the International Student Program at OES and Curriculum Director at the OES Summer Language Institute (PNWLI), Robin is currently the ESL Coordinator and Spanish teacher in the Upper School.
DOUG WHITMORE was appointed in 1988 to teach in the Lower School at OES. He currently teaches First Grade. Doug earned his BA from Principia College and his MAT from Lewis & Clark.
SPLINTER WRENN earned a BA from the University of Denver and an MSHA from the University of Colorado. He has been coaching lacrosse and offering various classes to OES students since 1997.
SHAOWEN YU is the founder of the U.S. Wushu Center and a former member of the Beijing Wushu Team in China. Master Yu and his instructors have many years of training and experience and are world champions.
