2008 Summer Faculty

Wonder, Explorer, Discovery Faculty

Allyson Tamara Bice earned her MS in Education from SUNY Brockport and her BA in Sociology from Ithaca College. She has her transitional license in Oregon, having just moved her from New York. This will be her first summer teaching in the Explorers Program.

Susan Calvert has been teaching art classes for OES Summer Discovery for the past 18 years and has more than 25 years of experience teaching art classes to school-age children. Susan also produces art work.

Scott Corris has taught at OES since 1990 and is currently teaching physical education for the Lower School. He earned his BS from Northland College. His passion is working with kids and leading sports activities.

Shannon Hacker currently teaches after school classes at OES. She has previously been the Summer Discovery director and has taught various classes for the OES Summer Program over the past ten years.

Fanny Horowitz earned a California Early Childhood Credential from Los Angeles Mission College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University. She began teaching preschool in 1985.

Jake McKinney earned his BA in Liberal Studies from Portland State University. His MA in Elementary Education is nearly complete and he loved his student teaching this year in early elementary grades.

Noah Martin earned his BA in Education with a teaching certificate endorsement in Theater Arts from Western Washington University. He has spent the past four years teaching drama classes throughout the NW.

Laura Pitsch earned her MAT from Portland State University and her BS in Science from University of Wisconsin. Laura was able to put her science and nature passions to work as an outdoor teacher for several years.

Lauran Pratt joined the OES faculty in 1997, teaching PE for the Middle School. He earned his BA in secondary physical education from Concordia University. He has spent the past eight summers teaching sports for Summer Discovery.

Karen Robnett earned her BA in Elementary Education from Whitworth College. She has taught the Explorers program for the past two years and actively substitutes for the Beaverton School District, as well as coaching sports.

Chris Thompson earned her degree in Elementary Education and Psychology from Elmira College and her Master of Education in Curriculum from Saint Michael’s College. Chris currently teaches Kindergarten at OES.

Mini Camp Faculty

Anna Angelova currently teaches fencing for OES. Anna is a former Bulgaria Olympian and has been working for the OES fencing program for the past five years.

Shaun Ball currently teaches golf and tennis at OES. He has 28 years of experience as a sports instructor.

Mary Barthelemy taught at OES for more than 20 years before she retired. She earned her BS and MAT from Lewis & Clark College. Mary is currently writing children’s books and teaching courses in children’s literature.

Phillip Bartsch has been teaching at Carus Elementary for over 30 years. He received his BA in Elementary Education from Nazarene College.

Deborah Bridgnell has taught Kindergarten at OES for the past eight years. She earned her BS in Education from Southern Oregon University and loves to cook with her children.

Karen Ehlers graduated from University of Oregon with a BFA in Painting and from The American University with an MFA in Painting. Karen exhibits her work both locally and nationally.

Tonya Griffin joined the OES community as a second grade teacher in 2006. She earned her MAT from Lewis & Clark College and a BA in Politics and Government from the University of Puget Sound.

Tony Hann has offered Chess Vision this past year at OES. He has been coaching chess for the past eight years.

Signe Hill earned a BA in Music and German Studies from Pacific University. She enjoys making collages, scrapbooking, and has been baking since she was knee high to a grasshopper.

Jane Kenney-Norberg joined OES as the science teacher for the Lower School in 1991. She believes, “Just because you are an adult is no excuse not to play with toys!” Jane received her MS from the University of Oregon.

Suzanne Kingearned a BS in Child Development and Family Science from NDSU and a M.Ed. from Portland State University. She has twelve years of teaching experience and taught third grade at OES this year.

Angela Leong earned her MS in Counseling Psychology from Chaminade University and a BS in Philosophy from Loyola Marymount University. She has 17 years of experience as a tennis coach and has taught many tennis camps for school-aged students through high school.

Emily Pritchard earned her BFA in Painting from the University of Georgia. She has worked as a graphic designer and is a freelance artist.

Teresa Shelby has been studying Latin and Roman history for the past ten years. As part of her studies, she has travelled to numerous sites of significance in ancient times, and has a growing collection of books, artifacts, and artwork on Roman themes. Teresa is a practicing physician with a doctor of medicing degree from the University of Lousiville and a BA in Philosopy and Political Science.

Penny St. Claire has been a ceramic artist and educator for over 25 years. She has an MA in Teaching Arts and has an Oregon Teaching Credential. She currently substitutes for Portland Public Schools and OES, and she teaches art classes at her studio in Northeast Portland.

Portland Wiz Kids offers programs for kids in engineering, inventing, and creative problem solving. All instructors come from a technical background with a degree in engineering, science, or computer science and are experienced teachers.

Teresa Shelby (see CHALLENGE WORKSHOPS)

Debra Thomas joined the OES community in 1995 and has held various positions including Lego teaching assistant and OES summer camp leader, and she currently is the OES Lower School technology teacher.

Jenny Wells earned her BA in Special Education from Radford University. She is a certified Oregon elementary teacher who has taught for five years. She recently opened her own glass teaching studio in the Alberta Arts District and sells her work nationally.

Doug Whitmore was appointed in 1988 to teach in the Lower School at OES. He currently teaches First Grade. Doug earned his BA from Principia College and his MAT from Lewis & Clark.

Splinter Wrenn earned a BA from the University of Denver and an MSHA from the University of Colorado. He has been coaching lacrosse and offering various classes to OES students since 1997.

Challenge Workshops Faculty

Gabe Edge earned his BA in Mathematics from Linfield College. He has been teaching mathematics in the Upper School of OES for the past four years.

Jeff Gadette earned his BA in Mathematics and his MBA from the University if Utah. He has been teaching mathematics to college and high school students for the past twenty years and has taught SAT courses at OES.

David Gomes teaches Web Design and Culture, and Digital Simulations and Virtual Worlds to OES Upper School students. David is actively exploring new software for creative work with digital technology.

Bettina Gregg earned her BS in Biology from Santa Clara University and has a teaching credential from Loyola Marymount University. In addition to teaching for the OES math department, she also is an OES alumna.

Liz Harlan-Ferlo received her MFA in poetry from the University of Oregon and her BA in Comparative Religion and Creative Writing from Oberlin College. She has done extensive Shakespeare study and performance. She currently serves the OES community as a chaplain.

Portland Wiz Kids (see MINI CAMPS)

Anna Schatz teaches Middle School humanities at OES. Anna has a law degree and a PhD in Comparative Literature. She has taught classes in analytical and creative writing, speech, test preparation, and study skills.

Anne Stabile earned her MAT from Lewis and Clark College and has her Oregon Teaching License. Anne’s focus for the past 10 years has been on the creative and interpretive sides of education, offering camps and after school classes.

Ann Sulzer teaches Middle School humanities at OES. She earned her BA in English and her secondary teaching certificate. She is currently working on her master’s in English literature. Ann also has experience in test preparation and administration.

Art Ward earned his PhD from UC-Berkeley in Humanities and his BA from Tufts University in English. He began teaching full time for the Upper School English Department in 2001.

Jeff Yonover earned his BA from Colgate University. He has been an avid landscape and wildlife photographer since a road trip to Alaska during his college days. In 2003, Jeff decided to pursue this passion full time and created what is now an international awardwinning underwater image portfolio.

Sue Jensen chairs the K-12 Music Department at OES. Sue is principal harpsichordist and organist for the Portland Baroque Orchestra.
