GINA ALONGI joined OES in 2008 and currently teaches in the Lower School Extended Care program. She earned her BA from Pomona College and is working on an M.Ed from Lesley University.
ALLYSON BICE earned her BA in education with a teaching certificate. She has more than five years experience teaching kindergarten in the public schools.
SUSAN CALVERT has been teaching art classes for OES Summer Discovery for the past 18 years and has more than 25 years of experience teaching art classes to schoolage children. Susan also produces art work.
KATRINA FROELICH earned her MA in Educational Theatre from New York University. She has been actively teaching drama and working in theater for the past 15 years. She will be offering drama in Discovery all summer.
FANNY HOROWITZ earned a California Early Childhood Credential from Los Angeles Mission College and a BA from McGill University. She began teaching preschool in 1985 and is teaching Wonder sessions 1 and 4.
ALYSSA LARSON is currently working on her MA in Education from PSU and completed her BS in Education from the University of Oregon. Alyssa has taught PreK the past four years and will be teaching Wonder sessions 2 and 3.
MICHELLE MILLER earned her BA in education with a teaching certificate and is a full-time teacher during the school year.
LAURA PITSCH earned her MAT from Portland State University and her BS in science from University of Wisconsin. Laura was able to put her science and nature passions to work as an outdoor teacher for several years.
LAURAN PRATT joined the OES faculty in 1997, teaching PE for the Middle School. He earned his BA in secondary physical education from Concordia University. He has spent the past eight summers teaching sports for Summer Discovery.

JUIDI ALONGI joined the Lower School at OES in 2008. She earned her BA from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
ART ANDERSON began coaching track and field at OES in 1997. He has been head Track & Field coach since 2002. Art has been coaching basketball at OES since 1999 and has been head girls’ basketball coach since 2001. He holds a degree from University of Nevada Reno in childhood development and criminal justice.
ANNA ANGELOVA currently teaches fencing for OES. Anna is a former Bulgaria Olympian and has been working for the OES fencing program for the past five years.
MARY BARTHELEMY taught at OES for more than 20 years before she retired. She earned her BS and MAT from Lewis & Clark College. Mary is currently writing children’s books and teaching courses in children’s literature.
PHILLIP BARTSCH has been teaching at Carus Elementary for more than 30 years. He received his BA in elementary education from Nazarene College.
DENNIS BLACK is a Lower School PE teacher and varsity basketball coach at OES. He was voted Northwest League Coach of the Year in 2001 and Oregon Coaches Association All-Star Coach in 2004. He played college basketball at the University of Portland and was a 1984 Portland Trailblazer draft pick.
DEBORAH BRIDGNELL has taught Kindergarten at OES for the past eight years. She earned her BS in education from Southern Oregon University and loves to cook with her children.
WAYNE BUND has taught in elementary classrooms for four years and is certified to teach in the State of Oregon. He holds a BA in fine arts/theater, and is currently an MFA student at Pacific Northwest College of Art.
SCOTT CORRIS has taught at OES since 1990 and is currently teaching physical education for the Lower School. He earned his BS from Northland College.
PHILLIP CRAIG received his BA in English from the University of North Carolina and his Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. He has more than a decade of experience with service learning in independent schools. He is OES head chaplain and facilitator of the OES All School Service Learning Committee.
NICK DePRETER teaches 4th grade at OES. He has played and coached baseball his whole life. Nick has an extensive background working with all ages as an outdoor educator and trip leader on rivers, mountains and deserts with Wilderness First Responder and Leave No Trace certification.
JOSIE EARLE started working at OES in 2008. She received her BA, with a concentration in psychology and education, from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts and has offered this camp on the East Coast previously.
GABE EDGE earned his BA in mathematics from Linfield College. He has been teaching mathematics in the Upper School of OES for the past four years.
DAVID GOMES teaches Web Design and Culture, and Digital Simulations and Virtual Worlds to OES Upper School students. David is actively exploring new software for creative work with digital technology.
JEFFRY GOTTFRIED is a licensed backcountry guide and Wilderness First Responder and founder of Educational Recreational Adventures. Jeff is a graduate of University of Oregon, Portland State and University of California, Berkeley.
BETTINA GREGG earned her BS in biology from Santa Clara University and has a teaching credential from Loyola Marymount University. In addition to teaching for the OES math department, she also is an OES alumna.
TONYA GRIFFIN joined the OES community as a second grade teacher in 2006. She earned her MAT from Lewis & Clark College and a BA in politics and government from the University of Puget Sound.
BETH HAHN is a licensed teacher with over twenty years experience teaching writing at all grade levels. She currently teaches fiction writing classes for gifted students, and tutors middle and high school students in writing, study, and organizational skills.
TONY HANN has been offering Chess Vision the past several years in the Portland area. He has been coaching chess for the past nine years.
LIZ HARLAN-FERLO received her MFA in poetry from the University of Oregon and her BA in comparative religion and creative writing from Oberlin College. She has done extensive Shakespeare study and performance. She currently serves the OES community as a chaplain.
VEENA IYENGAR earned her master’s in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics in India and an MBA from Portland State University.
SUE JENSEN has a Bachelor of Music degree from Lewis and Clark College and has been teaching Upper School art at OES since 1977.
LARRY KRIEGER resides in New Jersey and is offering his course for the first time on the West Coast. He received his BA in history from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1970, his MAT in history education in 1971, and an MA in sociology from Wake Forest in 1979.
KATHY LAYENDECKER became the chief financial officer of OES in 2005, bringing 20 years of finance experience including investment banking, asset management, strategic planning, and new company formation. She holds a BA in English from Stanford University and an MBA from Yale University.
ANGELA LEONG earned an MS in counseling psychology from Chaminade University and a BS in philosophy from Loyola Marymount University. She has 17 years of experience as a tennis coach and has taught many tennis camps for school-aged students through high school.
KELOLA McCRARY has studied in Spain, lived and taught in Venezuela, and worked intensively with the Spanish-speaking community here in Oregon. She holds a BA in Latin American Studies from Boston University and an MA in Spanish from Portland State. Over the past 18 years she has taught Spanish in a variety of settings, including in Hawaii and Japan.
KIAH JOHNSON MOUNSEY was appointed in 2007 and currently teaches third grade at OES. She earned her BS and master’s in education from the University of Oregon.
MAEGAN MURPHY began working at OES in August 2008 in the Business Office as administrative assistant for finance and human resources. She has a BA from Villanova University.

EMILY PRITCHARD earned her BFA in painting from the University of Georgia. She has worked as a graphic designer and is a freelance artist.
JERRY PURVIS has coached Middle School girls basketball at OES for six seasons–two seasons at the 6th grade level and four seasons at the A team level (7th/8th grade), winning one Metro League championship and reaching the semi-finals three times.
JILL ROSENTHAL attended Boston University and earned a BS in Elementary Education. She earned an M.Ed. from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in literacy instruction. She has worked with students from Pre-K to 6th grade both as a classroom teacher and as a reading/writing specialist. She currently teaches Pre-Kindergarten at OES.
DEBBY SCHAUFFLER has been teaching at OES since 1991. She earned a BA in French language and literature from Smith College in 1974 and an MA in comparative literature from the University of California at Berkeley in 1978.
ROBIN SCHAUFFLER began teaching at OES in 2003. She earned her BA in US history at Bryn Mawr College and is a veteran of many writing classes and critique groups.
TERESA SHELBY has been studying Latin and Roman history for the past ten years and has a growing collection of books, artifacts, and artwork on Roman themes. Teresa is a practicing physician with a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Louisville and a BA in philosophy and political science.

MISSY SMITH is the OES Varsity Girls basketball coach. She was named Coach of the Year by the Portland Interscholastic League while head basketball and golf coach at Grant High School. Missy is extensively involved in local athletics, has been director of the WNBA tryout camp, and has instructed and directed numerous camps and clinics.
PENNY ST. CLAIRE has been a ceramic artist and educator for more than 25 years. She has an MA in teaching arts and has an Oregon Teaching Credential. She currently teaches full-time and makes ceramics at her own studio.
HOPE STEVENS joined OES in 1990. She learned to cook through her love of food in the countries where she has lived. Hope earned her BA from Connecticut College and her MA from Trinity College, Hartford.
LAURA STRUDWICK was appointed to the Middle School faculty in 2003. She earned her Oregon Teaching License for Language Arts, grades 6-12, in 2000 and her master’s of education in 2003.
KRIS VAN HATCHER received his BA from Springfield College and was appointed to OES in 1974. Kris is the athletic director at OES; has coached the girls’ varsity soccer team and the lacrosse team. In 1995 he was the Region Seven National Soccer coach of the year and in 1996 he was voted 2A Oregon Athletic Director of the Year.
ANN VON OFENHEIM has been teaching math at OES for 10 years. She has her undergraduate degree from Cornell and her master’s degree from University of Oregon.
JENNY WELLS earned her BA in special education from Radford University. She is a certified Oregon elementary teacher. She has her own glass teaching studio in the Alberta Arts District and sells her work nationally.
DOUG WHITMORE was appointed in 1988 to teach in the Lower School at OES. He currently teaches First Grade. Doug earned his BA from Principia College and his MAT from Lewis & Clark. Splinter Wrenn earned a BA from the University of Denver and an MSHA from the University of Colorado. He has been coaching lacrosse and offering various classes to OES students since 1997.
JEFF YONOVER earned his BA from Colgate University. Jeff is an international award-winning underwater photographer.
