A Note from Ms. Fitz...

Dear Parents,

How delightful it was to gather in community this morning around the belltower! I savored the sun and the crisp September air, the heady mix of excitement and anxiety, the squeak of new shoes, and the joyous expectation on the faces of the children. As I looked around the circle I saw true community - diverse individuals gathered together in service of a common cause – the education of your children. I know that I speak for the lower school faculty and staff when I say that we are looking forward to a productive, dynamic and rewarding year with the students.

A Great Beginning
We have had a smooth first day of school. In visiting classrooms, I saw children settling quickly into routines. On the playground, students flocked to the new play equipment, skipped through the points of the compass, and played cooperatively on Water Works. By lunchtime, students were hungry! In the dining hall, I saw students inviting new friends to sit with them and swapping summer stories. At the end of the day, I saw tired and happy faces heading off. I predict they’ll sleep well tonight.

How Parents Can Help
You can help us make this first week even more streamlined by sending the After School Plan to Jenny, Jen or Lyn as soon as possible. The Extended Care program, buses, pickup lines depend upon this critical information. As well, we are still missing approximately 40 emergency forms. Please help us keep the children safe by sending in this information promptly. If you pick up your student, please make good use of the dashboard signs provided. Here in the office, we’ll be happy to supply extra copies of the dashboard sign, if you need them.

Adjustments in Daily Schedule
We have made some slight adjustments in the daily schedule, including ending the school day five minutes later at 2:50 pm. Please note that the start time for the school day remains the same.

LS Picnic
You’re invited to join us this Friday at 5:00 pm on the varsity field for a relaxing end to the first week of school. Thanks to Janice Sloenecker Berman and her wonderful team of parent volunteers for organizing a wonderful event. This year, in addition to the food and fun, we are providing printed, re-useable nametags. We ask that parents save these nametags and use them throughout the school year when coming in to volunteer. Let’s build community and keep OES green!

Community Diversity Link (Formerly Parent Diversity Committee)

First Committee Meeting: September 24, 8:00-9:30am, Drinkward Center Conference Room
First Books & Breakfast Discussion: The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, October 3, 8:00-9:30am, OES Dining Hall

New Name and First Committee Meeting: The collaborative, action-oriented diversity committee on campus (previously known as the Parent Diversity Committee) has the same worthy goals and new name, Community Diversity Link. All of the CDL’s activities will be open to any interested parents, administrators, faculty/staff members and US students. There are many project ideas in the works so please bring your perspectives and energy to our first meeting of the year on September 24, 8:00 to 9:30am in the Drinkward Center Conference Room.

First Books and Breakfast Discussion: Our book discussion series begins this year with THE NAMESAKE by Jhumpa Lahiri. This Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s beautifully written story chronicles the Ganguli family’s struggles to become Americans while maintaining ties with their homeland in Calcutta. Lahiri brilliantly illuminates the immigrant experience including the conflicts and generational differences inherent in honoring traditions in a new world. As an alternative or complement to reading the book, parents should consider watching the movie, which is artfully produced and runs true to the novel. Please join us on October 3, 8:00-9:30am, in the OES Dining Hall! It is not necessary to have read the book in order to be part of our discussion.

Future Books and Breakfast Discussion Meeting Titles:

November 13: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee
December 12: THE LARAMIE PROJECT by Moises Kaufman
February 6: THE LAST CHINESE CHEF by Nicole Mones
March 6: THE MEMORY KEEPER’S DAUGHTER by Kim Edwards

Music Notes

Welcome back to an exciting year ahead in music at OES! See the Music Notes page for information on private lessons, ensembles, and instrument rentals.

An Evening with the Violoncello

Come and hear the rich and sonorous voice of the cello! You will learn about its first Italian makers, its journey from the early Baroque (with its gut strings and light, pointy bow) to the modern cello of today’s symphony orchestra. You will see and hear examples of both instruments, as well as the viola da gamba, a much older instrument used in the Renaissance era, which is a “cousin” of the cello.
The cello is a wonderful instrument to play! Don’t miss this rare opportunity to meet the violoncello family!

Please join us for this fun cello informational!
Presented by: Joanna Blendulf, OES Cello Instructor
When: Wednesday, September 10, 7:00pm

School Closure Info

Occasionally, weather conditions necessitate closure or delayed opening of school. School closure may take one of three forms:

No School: News media will be notified by 6:00am. School will resume the following day, unless announced otherwise the next morning.

Delayed Start: If it appears that conditions will ease, school will convene two hours late. The media will broadcast this plan. Please continue to monitor reports, as unanticipated worsening of conditions may necessitate closure.

Early Closure: Should safety-threatening conditions develop during the day, students will be sent home early and media will be notified. Parents of Lower and Middle School students will be notified by telephone, and students will be supervised at school until they are picked up. Please be sure that the school offices have all of your correct contact numbers so you can be easily contacted in these situations. Upper School students will be responsible for making their own arrangements, but may stay at school until they can be picked up.

Closure Announcements: OES is a member of a school closure network that automatically contacts radio and television stations once our information is posted. Please monitor one of the major local stations or check http://newsbridge.net/Oregon_Episcopal/. The television stations' web sites all provide links to school closure announcements. In addition, closure messages are left on OES' telephone system-call 503.246.7771.

To submit information for the Wednesday Express, please email in the Lower School office by 3:00pm Monday.
