This is one of the great places in the world to study ancient life through the variety of fossils left behind in the ancient lahars (mud flows). Leaf fossils are found in many places. The nut beds, one of three places in the world with 3 dimensional nut fossils, is here. The mammal quarry yielded the fossilized bones of many animals from approximately 40 million years ago. The exciting news is thtat the excavations in the mammal quarry are about to resume after being on hold for about 50 years!
