This is a general description of the skills and processes expected from an OES fifth grader by the end of the school year. It is not intended as a comprehensive checklist of all the accomplishments of growing fifth graders.
Writing Students who are meeting expectations in writing: - Plan and organize ideas before starting to write - Select the appropriate writing mode (descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive) for the purpose and audience (a selection of poems, a mystery story, a social studies report, an ad for a newspaper) - Make notes and gather information from nonfiction sources on a selected topic - Develop the main idea and include supporting materials that add interest and information - Vary sentence structure for added interest - Group sentences that contain related information into well-organized paragraphs - Link paragraphs to form a clear, focused paper - Select and use appropriate vocabulary words for depth and interest (adverbs and adjectives) - Use dialogue to enhance character development - Reread and revise for clearer meaning - Proofread and edit for spelling, grammar and punctuation - Master weekly spelling lessons
Reading Students who are meeting expectations in reading: - Read orally with fluency and expression - Read for literal comprehension and makes inferences based on implicit information drawn from a text (Did Jack succeed because of luck and magic or because of hard work?) - Can retell a piece of fiction with details about sequence, characters and plot - Find the main idea and key information in nonfiction sources to research a selected topic - Use a range of techniques (skim, scan, self-correct, infer meanings of unknown words from the context) - Read independently with focus for at least 30 minutes - Are able to read and comprehend books by authors such as Scott ODell, Lois Lowry, Katherine Paterson, Avi and Gary Paulsen
Math Students who are meeting expectations in math: - Can develop charts and simple graphs, analyze & interpret findings of simple surveys - Have mastered the four basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using a 2-digit divisor - Are beginning to compute the basic operations in fractions, decimals and percentages - Can measure the area, perimeter and angles of simple geometric shapes - Develop & apply problem solving strategies - Are beginning to analyze & check their own mathematical work - Are able to communicate their mathematical thinking both verbally and in writing
Listening and Speaking - Communicates ideas clearly in daily classroom activities - Continues to apply speaking skills in oral presentations - Listens to others and responds appropriately - Takes responsibility for following directions
