SSAT Information

Students applying for grades 6–12 are required to take an admissions test as part of the application process. OES requires the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test). In some cases we can accept a recent ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) in lieu of the SSAT.

OES is a member of a consortium of Portland-area schools that administer and use the SSAT as part of the admissions process. Regardless of where students are applying for admission, they may take the SSAT at any official SSAT location worldwide and have their scores sent to the school(s) they designate.

Local applicants may take the SSAT at any of the locations listed below.

Students living outside the Portland area may take the SSAT at any SSAT test location. (Check www.ssat.org/register for national and international dates and locations.)*

When registering you will need to know:
1. Your desired test date
2. Test center location and school code
3. School code(s) for the school(s) where you would like the scores to be sent.

The OES School Code is 5572.

Please remember that to be considered for OES admission, you should take the test by February 18, 2012. Applicant files with testing completed after that date will be considered on a space available basis.

*Please note that "national" test dates have registration deadlines three weeks before the test.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does it matter where I take the test?

NO, you may take the test at any location worldwide. Just indicate that you would like the results sent to OES by entering our school code (5572) when you register.

2. Does it matter when I take the test?

Yes, our application deadline for admissions is January 30, 2012. You must take the test by February 18 so that the results will get to us before our admissions committees meet.

Applications and testing completed after these dates will be considered on a space-available basis. If you are a late applicant, you may take the test on March 3, April 21, or June 9, 2012, or contact the Oregon Episcopal School Admissions Office (503-768-3115) for individual arrangements.

3. How do I register for the test?

  • October 15, 2011
  • November 12, 2011
  • December 10, 2011
  • January 7, 2012
  • February 4, 2012

  • January 22, 2012 (Sunday)
  • February 11, 2012
  • February 18, 2012

4. How do I obtain an admission ticket?

If you register online, you should print out your own admission ticket as part of the registration process.

If you register by mail or fax, SSAT will send you an admission ticket by mail or e-mail within one week of registration.

The registration fee is $116 payable to SSAT.

5. Is there a deadline for registration?

National dates have a registration deadline three weeks before the test date. The late registration deadline is two weeks before the test date and there is an additional $30 late fee. After the late registration deadline, there is a $60 additional late fee for standby status. If you register as a standby, you will find out when you check in on the morning of the test if there are testing materials and space for you.

For the three Portland-only flex test dates, we ask that you register no later than 10 days before the test date. If you are late registering (less than 10 days before the test), there are no late fees, however, please call the testing location before registering to be sure there will be spots available.

6. Do I need to order Preparing and Applying for Independent School Admission and the SSAT for $30 to prepare for the test?

NO. You don’t need to prepare specifically for this test. This is a standard multiple choice test in reading and math plus a writing sample. Sample questions are provided on the SSAT web site at www.ssat.org/ssat/test/test-prep-sample.html. Applicants may want to familiarize themselves with the format of analogies in the verbal section.

Please remember that SSAT tests applicants who are currently in grades 5–11, so the questions will represent a range of difficulty. The sample questions are intended to show the types of questions asked. Questions on the actual test will be geared to the age of the students taking the test.

7. Do all applicants for grades 6–12 take the same test?

NO, there are two levels of the test, Lower Level for applicants to grades 6–8 and Upper Level for applicants to grades 9–12. Within each group, scores will be normed by grade level.

8. What are the hours of the test?

The Portland administrations of the SSAT will run from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 12:45 p.m. There will be two short breaks. Please arrive between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. Other national and international locations may have different schedules. (Check www.ssat.org.)

9. Do I need to bring anything to the test?

YES. Please bring the following items:

  • Your SSAT admission ticket
  • Two sharpened #2 pencils
  • A good eraser
  • A water bottle
  • A light snack

10. How will I learn my scores?

SSAT will send you your scores approximately two and a half weeks after the test.

11. How will my scores be reported to the schools?

At the time of registration, you may designate two schools to receive your scores. This service is included in your registration fee. For additional score reports, there is an additional fee. Please enter the OES code (5572) if you would like your scores sent to us.

12. What if I cannot test on any of the listed test dates?

Please call the Admissions Office at 503-768-3115.
